Ph.D. 1998 Horticulture (Weed Science): Michigan State University. GPA: 3.76 / 4.0
Dissertation Title: Characterization of Linuron Resistance in a Biotype of Common Purslane.
Dissertation research addressed the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of a common purslane biotype that no longer responded to linuron application in a carrot field. The overall goal of the research was to characterize this mutant common purslane and determine the mechanism of mutation. This research determined a new mutation in the D1 protein of the photosynthetic process in this biotype of common purslane. This mutation has not been described before at the whole plant level.

Extension Program Overview
I. Weed Control in Fruit and Vegetable Crops
My goals for this program are, first, to utilize the results of field research in developing educational materials and resources for the continued education and benefit of Extension Agents and growers. In the past 2 years, I have organized 20 grower meetings, presented 12 talks at in-state and out-of-state conferences, field days, and IPM meetings, organized 8 extension agent workshops, and set out 27 field demonstration plots, with all activities focusing on herbicide performance and evaluation. These activities have resulted in 12 oral or poster presentations at national and international conferences, as well as 17 research reports in 2005 and 2006 alone.
I completely re-wrote, expanded, and re-formatted the weed control sections in the Midwest Commercial Tree Fruit Spray Guide (ID-92), the Midwest Commercial Small Fruit and Grape Spray Guide (ID-94), and the Vegetable Production Guide for Commercial Growers (ID-36). ID-92 and ID-94 are annual publications available in 10 states, namely Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, and West Virginia. I have been the sole contributor to the weed control section of these multi-state publications. The impact of my contribution is that herbicide recommendations reach tree fruit and small fruit growers in the 10 states listed above. Similarly, I have been the sole contributor in updating the weed control section of all 20 vegetable crops in ID-36. I have received many calls from growers relating how useful and helpful ID-36, specifically the herbicide section, has been in their daily decision making activities.
My goal is to be recognized as the weed management specialist in fruit and vegetable crops in Kentucky and the region. I have been invited to meetings and conferences in neighboring states because I am the ‘weed control expert’ (quoting emails). In addition, I have been nominated the Kentucky representative in the North Central Weed Science Society organization. My collaboration with the South East Vegetable Extension Workgroup has given me name recognition in the surrounding region.
II. Fruit and Vegetable Production
The goal of this program is the continued education of agents, growers, agriculture chemical suppliers, and Master Gardeners. Through training videos and PowerPoint presentations, TV and radio shows, demonstration plots, pesticide management schools, and grower meetings, I have helped meet the demands of a growing fruit and vegetable industry with 6 presentations at the annual meeting, 28 educational programs at pest management schools and grower meetings, and finally 6 training workshops at Master Gardener’s classes. Through demonstration plots, consulting, and grower meetings, I have assisted 15 new growers start their fruit or vegetable enterprises, all of whom are still in business.
County Extension Agent Training
The goal of this program is the continued education of Extension Agents through field days, electronic and printed publications and workshops. Towards that goal, I have completed:
●
A new extension publication (in print) titled ‘Pesticide Amounts for Small Volume Sprays’.●
A new extension publication (in departmental review) titled ‘Honeyvine Milkweed Control in Tree Fruits, Small Fruits, and Grapes’.●
Six field days were organized on blackberry, grape, and tree fruit pruning, grafting, and production. The impact of the extension publications and field days is felt by the numerous thank you letters and requests for additional copies.
On-Farm Demonstration Plots and Consulting
As part of a Horticulture Council grant, extension associates were hired to establish on-farm vegetable demonstration plots and train tobacco growers interested in diversifying their farm operations. In 2005, five demonstration plots were established in western Kentucky. I presented weed control and vegetable production talks at the field days organized by the Extension Associate and assisted with on-farm consulting whenever needed.
IPM-related Activities
Beginning in 2005, I collaborated on a multi-state IPM program (Great Lakes Vegetable Working Group) on developing vegetable grower surveys. I am the primary contributor and editor of 3 surveys addressing pepper, tomato, and cabbage.
I participate annually in the Kentucky Vineyard Society grape IPM and the Kentucky State Horticulture Society apple IPM programs, through field days and training sessions. These meetings are impacting practically all the grape and fruit growers in the state of Kentucky.
Research Program Overview
I. NC-140 Pome and Stone Fruit Rootstock Evaluation
The NC-140 program has been beneficial to Kentucky fruit growers who continue to ask for new rootstocks suitable for Kentucky climate and soil. I initiated 3 new projects, namely the 2002 apple rootstock trial, the 2003 apple rootstock trial, and the 2003 apple physiology trial. Two pre-existing NC-140 projects are still maintained. I presented a total of 5 talks at grower meetings and at regional society meetings. Results of the NC-140 research will be published in national and international journals. I am the primary author of 2 refereed articles accepted for publication in Journal of American Pomological Society. I am the co-author on 5 additional publications that resulted from this program.
II. Weed Control in a Sustainable Fruit and Vegetable Production Program
My goals lie in testing non-labeled herbicides for potential registration in fruits and vegetables and evaluating reduced rates, application timing or methods, and herbicide combinations. In 2005-2006, 27 replicated herbicide trials were conducted on apple, peach, grape, blueberry, blackberry, tomato, sweet corn, pumpkin, cantaloupe, cucumber, and pepper. The short-term impact of these experiments is oral and poster presentations at regional meetings such as the North Central Weed Science Society, the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientist, and at the Kentucky fruit and vegetable annual meeting. The long-term impact is published articles in refereed journals after additional data collection of potentially significant experiments.
Two research projects have been established in 2005 at UKREC, with the goal of published articles as a finished product. The first project evaluates herbicide application under plastic in strawberry production. This is a novel application of herbicide and initial results show promise for 4 of the 6 herbicides tested. This project got the interest of IR-4 and I received a grant fund to support this research in the hopes that this research will lead towards new herbicide registrations. The second project evaluates various herbicides combinations for use in plasticulture tomato. My goal is to submit the 2 articles in 2007.
