Trial Garden Information

Bed Preparation

The beds were tilled and amended with composted manure generated by the Horse Unit at the University of Kentucky's Maine Chance Farm, then mulched with a whole-tree mulch donated by Thoroughbred Landscape Products (Creech Industries).

Planting

All plants were grown in 4-inch ellepots, right, donated by Knox Nursery and Ellepot USA (The Blackmore Company). Plants were planted still in their ellepots, which are made of a biodegradable fiber. Nine plants of each variety were planted in a 3 by 3 foot plot providing 12-inch spacing between plants.

Maintenance

A slow release fertilizer was applied once, just after planting. No additional fertilizer was added the entire season. The beds were irrigated regularly the first few weeks after planting to help the plants get established. The annual plants at the arboretum received periodic irrigation, but the perennials at the Horticulture Research Farm received no additional irrigation. No pesticides were used at any of the trial garden locations.
