CORN EARWORM AND HORNWORMS ON PEPPERS

Ric Bessin
University of Kentucky Department of Entomology

This past week we have seen several samples of tomato/tobacco hornworm and corn earworm damage to pepper fruit. The corn earworm damage appeared as feeding sites on the upper surface of the cap and stem on the fruit. Yellow striped armyworm occasionally attacks peppers and causes damage similar to that of cornearworm. Whereas the hornworm feeding is on the surface of the fruit, near the shoulder. Hornworms create a shallow, but broad feeding scar to the fruit. There is usually considerable defoliation of individual plants when hornworms are present.

Hornworms and corn earworm are not listed in the recommendations for peppers in ID-36. However, the sprays listed for European corn borer control should provide good control of these pests.
