Sweep Net Procedure

Solid seeded soybean are quite difficult to sample for insects using a shake cloth especially when the plants are large. A 15 inch sweep net can be used to allow you to determine pest levels in these cases. This method is accomplished by beating 48 plants into the sweep net at each scouting location in the field. When plants are small, several may be included each time you shake then in the sweep net. As plants grow, fewer and fewer plants may be shaken at one time. Be sure you shake undisturbed plants because insects will move from disturbed plants.
