True Armyworm Moth by R.Bessin

True Armyworm

True armyworm moths are a uniform pale brownish-gray with a 1-1/2 inch wing span. A single, small but prominent white dot is present in the center of each fore wing.

Adult armyworm moths may fly as early as March in Kentucky. The larval stage will occure mid-May through June. Infestations usually develop in small grain or grass fields. Cool, wet springs favor armyworm development. For additional information see IPM-2 Kentucky Integrated Crop Management Manual for Corn, EntFact-109 Armyworms in Corn and True Armyworm Scout Info Sheet.

The following graph shows the average trap counts for True Armyworm moths at the UK Research and Education Center for the five year period from 1997 through 2001. This information is also available through the Kentucky Pest News web site.
