Oak Ridge, Tennessee

In Eastern Tennessee, the Oak Ridge Greenway is an example of a greenway still in the making.  In July 1992, the city council of Oak Ridge gathered together volunteer groups such as neighborhood associations, clubs, and civic organizations to develop a concept for city greenways.  The rugged topography in this part of Tennessee was unsuited for development and therefore set aside these ideal areas for recreation or green areas.  All together, five greenways were proposed.  Funding by the city and grants has led to the completion of 13 miles of trails.
