Design Development The refined conceptual designs generated during the charrette identified three sites that were considered crucial to defining the future character and use of the corridor. While most people surveyed during the public presentation had little interest in seeing the corridor become a place for new development, the design committee believed growth to be inevitable (much development is already ongoing near Masterson Station), and urban infill is seen as a viable (perhaps necessary) option to conserving rural land for rural use. Given this challenge, the UK Landscape Architecture students were asked to develop different “community” or neighborhood development alternatives in three specific locations along the Town Branch to illustrate how residential and economic development, environmental concerns, and recreational amenities could be addressed. The task was to develop each of these sites based upon a given program (generated by the faculty), an understanding of the issues surrounding Town Branch, and the goals of Lexington. Several of these proposals are provided here as representative examples of how careful design can support the vision and rebirth of the Town Branch (click on above images). |
