After studying the local opportunities and constraints found within the Town Branch Corridor, regional connections were also considered.  Looking at the existing greenway plan for Fayette County, it was observed that many of the planned greenways were located along stream corridors.  If we were to look far into the future, these greenways could someday be expanded to include all stream corridors, forming a comprehensive network of open space while providing wildlife habitat and protecting water quality throughout the county. 

There are also several proposed state bike trails that would  run through and around Fayette County, such as the Bluegrass Bike trail which would extend across the northern section of the county boundary.  This trail could possibly link in with a Town Branch greenway, serving to connect downtown Lexington with the state’s network of bike trails and significantly expanding the recreational amenity of the Town Branch. 

The Elkhorn also serves as a destination for kayakers and canoists, and it is possible that paddlers could utilize the Town Branch for such water-based activity if boat ramps and access points were established at key locations.  During the course of the inventory phase, students from the University of Kentucky had the opportunity to test this concept, and much of the analysis for sections six and seven was conducted from a canoe.
