Drying and Storage Properties of Selected Specialty Grains

Drying, storage and germination characteristics of selected specialty grains
Objectives:
-
Determine drying differences that may exist between new grain crops and popular adapted varieties of the same crops. Specifically, conduct drying tests at the BAE Grain Conditioning Lab at Princeton with high-oil corn, triple null soybean lines, and soft white winter wheat that are harvested above the usual maturity moisture levels (15 percent for corn and 13.5 percent for soybeans and wheat).
-
Measure the equilibrium moisture content of the same varieties of high-oil corn, triple null soybeans, soft white winter wheat, and popular corn, soybean, and soft red winter wheat to determine if there are differences between specialty grains and popular varieties and if different drying and storage recommendations are needed.
-
Determine the seed germination and vigor of seed dried in Objective 1 to determine whether drying conditions reduce seed quality.
-
Develop a mathematical model to predict the drying behavior, equilibrium moisture content level, and seed deterioration rates of these new grain crops.
