Greenhouse crops

Objectives:

Optimizing organic production of select small fruits using high tunnels

  • Establish an organically managed small fruit orchard at the UK Horticulture Research Farm. The orchard will be planted in two adjacent locations; one uncovered, and one under an unheated high tunnel structure.

  • Assess if organic management techniques can result in high yielding, quality, insect and disease-free plants.

  • Prepare Extension and research publications detailing the production systems used in this orchard.

  • Annualized perennial production: An untapped opportunity for Kentucky's greenhouse growers

  • To identify cultivars that can be efficiently produced in a single growing season. Those cultivars that produce the best quality product with the shortest production time and least pest issues will be selected for further study.

  • To identify cultivars with superior landscape performance under low maintenance conditions.

  • To optimize scheduling and production practices for the selected cultivars to maximize profitability.

  • To conduct an economic analysis of annualized perennial production compared to annual bedding plant production in Kentucky.

  • To develop a set of production guidelines for the selected cultivars and disseminate them to Kentucky's greenhouse growers through the Cooperative Extension Service.
