2008 Vegetable and Melon BudgetsCropsThe Vegetable & Melon budgets include 17 common vegetable and melon crops grown in Kentucky. They include: Broccoli, Green Cabbage, Cucumbers-Fresh Market, Cucumbers-Trellised Fresh Market, Eggplant, Muskmelon, Okra, Bell Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Potatoes-Fresh Market, Pumpkins, Summer Squash, Winter Squash, Sweet Corn, Staked Tomatoes, Seedless Watermelons and Seeded Watermelons.
Please note: These budgets were updated on September 18, 2009, and some figures have changed significantly. The budgets reside in a Microsoft Excel file "2008vegmelon.xls". The budgets are meant to serve as a management and decision-making guide for current and prospective producers of these enterprises. The budgets are not intended to replace a producer's own records and estimates. Producers are strongly encouraged to adapt these budgets to their specific situation. In the absence of such data, however, these budgets can serve as a reasonably accurate cost and income guide.
UK budget estimates are based on the best and most accurate input cost information and crop price projections available at the time of release. Further, costs and returns are based on production practices and yield levels thought to be representative of typical growers in Kentucky given normal growing conditions.
Because price, cost, and yield expectations change over time, and because each producer will have unique cost, production, and management levels, these budgets can serve only as a general cost and return guide.

This spreadsheet is password protected so individual cells cannot be changed, nor can worksheets be added or removed. Cells containing numbers and text cannot be manipulated without removing the sheet protection (see next paragraph below). Also, remember that enterprise budgets are calculated on a PER ACRE basis. Therefore, costs that are expressed on a per acre basis have the quantity column fixed at 1 acre.
Users who desire to change budget formats or figures must remove sheet protection first. Also, to add or delete worksheets, the workbook protection must be removed. The password to remove sheet or workbook protection is uk. Once sheet protection is removed, use caution to avoid changing formulas by accident.
To navigate from one enterprise budget to the next, click on the tab at the bottom of the screen that has the specific enterprise name on it. This will take you to that particular enterprise budget. Use the arrows to the left of the tabs to navigate to the beginning or end of the list of enterprise budgets.
