Project Description

There is always a challenge in providing new and exciting programming for campers 9 – 14 years of age who come to camp year after year.  After a successful two week pilot in 2006, classes in horse grooming and care as well as basic riding skills were offered during the 2007 summer camp season at the West Kentucky 4-H camp.  Cooperative extension agents and the state 4-H office partnered with Murray State University to implement the program, with MSU providing the horses and an intern to teach the classes for the summer program.  Grants and contributions totaling nearly $100,000 from the Kentucky 4-H Foundation, KEEP, the Kentucky Horse Council and private donations provided the funding for a 7200 sf. horse barn, 5 acre corral area and basic outdoor riding arena.  4-H horse clubs, businesses and private donors contributed equipment and riding apparel for the program.  The summer 4-H horse program teaches life skills, builds confidence and instills leadership in the youth and adults involved from the 36 counties in western Kentucky who camp at West Kentucky 4-H camp.

Impact

Several hundred campers were able to participate in the new horse classes offered in 2007.  Of those that participated:   67% learned how to groom a horse; 69% learned how to saddle (tack) a horse ; 72% learned how to pick out a horse hoof ; 77% learned how to properly and safely ride a horse; and 81% learned about a new breed of horse.  With the success of this first full summer of classes, the 4-H Program will work toward improving the equine facilities and expanding equine programs offered at the West Kentucky 4-H Camp.
