Alzheimers: Get the Facts

C. Whipple
HEEL

Project Description

 In response to the burgeoning population of baby boomers who are over 65 and an identified need in many counties in eastern Kentucky for Alzheimer’s disease information, HEEL collaborated in the fall of 2006 with three East KentuckyFCS Agents to develop and pilot  “Alzheimer’s Disease: Getting the Facts," an Extension Homemakers program piloted in District 1. Sanders Brown Center on Aging provided $30,000 for the printing of materials.

Impact

In eighteen eastern Kentucky counties, 181 Leaders were trained to teach 3,077 Homemakers about Alzheimer’s disease (AD).  Based on pre and post survey results,  181 leaders report:

a.) they now know the definition of AD;

b.) could identify the risk factors;

c.) were aware of the financial impact of AD;

d.) understood the importance of self-care for the caregivers; and

e.) knew where to find more information about AD.

Additionally, 80% reported the adoption of various prevention strategies taught in this program.  In several counties, there have been Caregiver Support groups formed as a result of the “Alzheimer’s Disease: Getting the Facts” program.  As a result of the successful pilot, the program is now  being implemented statewide.
