The Kentucky Forest Conservation Act signed by Governor Patton will go into effect July 15, 2000. The highlights include:

  • Kentucky Master Logger graduate on-site and in charge on every commercial logging operation (excluding horse loggers) starting on July 15, 2000. Past KML graduates will be "grandfathered" in.
  • BMPs are mandated to be used on every commercial logging operation (including horse logging).
  • The Kentucky Division of Forestry will be the primary agency responsible for working with loggers to see that the act is enforced.
  • To maintain your Kentucky Master Logger status you will need to complete 6 hours of continuing education courses every 3 years. The starting date for this is July 15, 2000. Anyone completing the KML course prior to July 15, 2000 will have until July 15, 2003 to obtain the 6 hours of continuing education.
  • WHAT IT DOES NOT INCLUDE: the legal requirements do not pertain to individuals cutting their own timber on non-industrial land, timber harvesting jobs which are incidental to farming or surface mining, firewood cutting or christmas tree harvesting. Approximately 20 Kentucky Master Logger Training Programs will be run each year for the next 2 years. Stay tuned to this page to get more information on the location, availability, and registration for these programs.

  •  For further information on legal requirements for loggers go to the Forest Conservation Act section of Kentucky Division of Forestry's web page.
