Project Description
The Kentucky Leadership for Agricultural and Environmental Sustainability
(KLAES) Project:
- Involves farmers, Extension Agents, Community Farm Alliance,
Farm Bureau, and others;
- Consists of 14 local and regional groups focused on agriculture and
its impact on the economy, the environment, and the community;
- Has been a catalyst for community development efforts related to
agricultural marketing, expansion of agricultural production and the
development of alternative agricultural enterprises;
- Exemplifies an extremely successful rural development
program structure.
The KLAES Project is a statewide effort to identify steps toward more
sustainable farm systems in Kentucky. Local groups developed study
that are resulting in improved abilities to affect economic,
environmental, and social impacts of agricultural production and
marketing. Participants include students, senior citizens, farmers,
urban dwellers, vertically integrated operations, and family farms.
