Project Description

The Kentucky Leadership for Agricultural and Environmental Sustainability (KLAES) Project:

  • Involves farmers, Extension Agents, Community Farm Alliance, Farm Bureau, and others;
  • Consists of 14 local and regional groups focused on agriculture and its impact on the economy, the environment, and the community;
  • Has been a catalyst for community development efforts related to agricultural marketing, expansion of agricultural production and the development of alternative agricultural enterprises;
  • Exemplifies an extremely successful rural development program structure.

The KLAES Project is a statewide effort to identify steps toward more sustainable farm systems in Kentucky. Local groups developed study that are resulting in improved abilities to affect economic, environmental, and social impacts of agricultural production and marketing.
