Professor Levine is Director of the Center for Sustainable Cities, a
multidisciplinary association of faculty and researchers at the University
of Kentucky with a partner organization of researchers and scientists in
Vienna, Austria called Oikodrom. The Center has become known for
developing the theoretical basis for sustainable cities which has been
disseminated through many lectures and publications, as well as developing
designs for actual projects, particularly in Italy and Austria. Professor
Levine was the principal author of the European Charter of Cities and Towns
Towards Sustainability (the Aalborg Charter) which has been ratified by
more than 22 European cities and has become the principle vehicle in Europe
for the realization of the Local Agenda 21 provisions of the 1992 Earth
Summit agreements in Rio de Janeiro. Levine is also known for his
pioneering work in solar architecture. He was the founding chairperson of
the Sustainability Division of the American Solar Energy Society. Levine
has over 100 publications which include papers, journal articles, books and
US patents. He has won awards in architectural design, energy
conservation, urban design and sustainable cities.
