ANDRE
PATER, Grey Thoroughbred and Jockey in Red Silks, pastel courtesy of the artisit |
Polish-born André Pater is best known for his spirited oil paintings and lush pastels that are rooted deeply in the American racing industry. A resident of Lexington since 1988, Pater’s subjects range from horsemen riding with the hounds in Kentucky’s rolling hills, to jockeys in their bright silks working Thoroughbreds, to the horses themselves. When Roy and Gretchen Jackson wanted a painting to remember their gallant Derby winner Barbero, they called Pater.
An established
star in the field of sporting art—many consider him to be the heir apparent
to Sir Alfred Munnings—Pater is a classically trained artist who is
equally at home painting sensitive portraits. His work is widely collected
in Europe as well as the United States.
