The years between 1600 and 1800 witnessed a rich cultural and artistic flowering in Europe. Increasingly diversified sources of patronage and a thriving art market encouraged specialization with artists depicting a wide range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, scenes from everyday life, still lifes, as well as religious and mythological subjects. Kim Spence, the Speed’s Curator of Collection Research and Special Projects, will discuss highlights from the exhibition The Golden Age of Painting from the Speed Art Museum, offering insights into the artistic, religious, and historical context of the paintings featured in this exhibition. She will also explore the stories, and subjects portrayed in these remarkable works of art.
