Lucas, a self-taught artist, began drawing and painting the coalfields of Letcher County, Kentucky, while still a young boy and, since the 1970s, has completed more than five hundred paintings. His subject matter falls into several distinct categories: coal mining, history, the Bible, and scenes of community. Using strong colors and bold compositions, Lucas evokes the warmth and struggle of life in Eastern Kentucky.
