Acquired — to buy or collect

Ceremonial — type of memorial event, or celebration

Commercially — sold by a business

Coverlet — a decorative bedspread

Crest — a badge or symbol that can represent a family name or type of government

Decorative Arts — art made for a practical, or functional purpose (weaving and textiles, ceramics, glassware), but is also used as a decoration.

Epoch — a described event or specific period of time in which the event happened

Esteem — to respect

Homespun — cotton or wool yarns woven into a cloth by hand

Indigo — deep blue color from the Indigo plant

Industrialization — the production of goods, the development of factories to produce goods

Landscape — a picture or scene involving land

Likenesses — to paint, draw, or represent a person or object as closely to the original as possible

Loom — that which is used to weave cloth. The loom holds the warp so that the weft may be woven into it.

Migration — to move, or migrate, from one location to the next. Many birds migrate South for the winter.

Motifs — a repeated theme or pattern

Muted palette — soft tones of color, not bold or bright tones

Portrait — a picture of a person or animal

Prominent — well known

Prosperous — doing well or wealthy

Scholars — a person respected for their knowledge of a subject, a well-educated person

Textiles — woven fabrics

Whimsy — to decide on a ‘whim’, rather than to use the expected way that most people would choose
