Vision

The University of Kentucky Art Museum is a world-class art museum.

Mission
The University of Kentucky Art Museum promotes the understanding and appreciation of art to enhance the quality of life for the people of Kentucky through collecting, exhibiting, preserving, and interpreting
outstanding works of visual art from all cultures.

Goals

We will maintain a regular schedule of exhibitions from the collection and outside sources, with the primary goal of presenting a “blockbuster” exhibition.

Objectives:
The museum will fund and mount three outside exhibitions a year, presenting outstanding art and research from a variety of museums, private collections, and cultures.

The museum will share the content and knowledge revealed in exhibitions with a wide range of university teaching. For example, for the exhibition of Pre-Columbian pottery, planned for Spring 2005, we will seek partners from the university who focus on study of the cultures of the Americas.

The museum will present accompanying interpretive materials and programs for each exhibition, and aggressively market exhibitions and programs to the community.

The museum will fundraise to organize an exhibition on Bluegrass Collects: Barbizon To Brittany to be presented in 2006. This will be a statewide partnership to showcase regional museum and private collections in a scholarly exhibition with catalogue, that is being planned to travel to another venue.

Success indicators:
Museum coordinates with at least one other university teaching department for each exhibition.

Exhibitions receive good attendance and critical acclaim in regional press.

Exhibition Bluegrass Collects: Barbizon to Brittany travels to Huntington, W.V; exhibition and accompanying catalogue receives favorable reviews in the field.

We will aggressively develop and preserve an outstanding art collection.

Objectives:
The museum will develop a strategy to expand and strengthen our ties with regional art collectors. For example, Fall 2004 exhibiton on Art nouveau glad and pottery will solidify commitment of a promised bequest of Tiffany glass collection.

The museum will attract gifts of significant works of art.

The museum will increase the membership and impact of the Collectors group.

The museum will increase resources for collection conservation, matting and framing.

Success indicators:
Director and Curator build relationships with art collectors each year, adding three new contacts annually.

Museum receives significant new acquisitions/loans each year, and builds list of promised gifts.

Collectors’ group makes major purchase every three years.

Museum was awarded grant in 2003 for conservator survey of collection and facility. Grant outcome will be used to structure future activities. Museum will organize collection/preservation fundraiser in 2005.

We will increase the impact of UKAM in the community and the state, serving our mission of improving the quality of life for the people of Kentucky.

Objectives:
The museum will survey and develop its audience, and develop programming and marketing strategies to attract new visitors and members.

The museum will increase its involvement and partnerships within the university and the community and expand community advocacy.

The museum will increase its educational impact through outreach and website development.

Success indicators:
Complete Luce grant and website curriculum by 2004.

Develop and institute corporate membership/workplace giving program by 2005.

Increase visitation and membership by 20%.

We will address the deficiency of facility and related staffing needs.

Objectives:
The museum will fundraise for and implement a feasibility study to address facility inadequacies.

Assess and explore avenues for meeting present and future staffing needs, through internships, scholarship, and endowment.

Develop a program and seek university approval for a new/expanded facility.

Success indicators:
Complete feasibility study by 2005.

Fund curatorial/education internship scholarship by 2006.

We will develop and implement a plan to financially support the stated goals.
