CALL FOR PAPERS

Classics Section--55th Annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference--18-20 April 2002

Deadline for submission of proposals, November 1, 2001

The Classics Section of the 55th annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference solicits proposals for papers on four topics: CLASSICAL STUDIES, SPACE & PLACE, TEXT & IMAGE, and a LATIN LANGUAGE & LITERATURE with papers presented exclusively in Latin. The Conference will be held in Lexington and on the campus of the University of Kentucky, 18-20 April 2002. Papers will be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Proposals of no more than two pages in length should be sent, preferably via email, by November 1st to:

Description of specific topics:

CLASSICAL STUDIES - Proposals may be submitted on any topic pertaining to the language, literature, or civilization of ancient Greece or Rome, including the Classical Tradition.

SPACE & PLACE IN THE GRECO-ROMAN WORLD - Proposals are specifically solicited which discuss concepts of either real or imagined spaces or places in literature, archaeology, religion, art, etc.

TEXT & IMAGE: POINTS OF CONVERGENCE IN CLASSICAL LITERATURE AND ART - Proposals are specifically solicited which examine material in which verbal and visual representation are combined. Examples would includes ekphrasis, works such as Lucian's Eikones, the use of visual metaphors in philosophy and theology, and physical sites which are extant only in literary description.

Quaesumus ut omnes oratores orationum suarum exemplaria chartacea secum afferant, quo facilius qui audiant loquela Latina minus assuefacti, verba tamen loquentium capiant. Qui orationes in sessionibus habebunt, eos oportebit et pretium adeundi solvere et, quod speramus, conventum participare totum.

 

Acceptance of a paper for presentation implies a commitment to register and attend the conference. All presenters must pay the registration fee. Graduate students receive a substantial discount of the registration fee and are particularly encouraged to submit papers.
