Engineering Earth: The Impacts of Megaengineering Projects

. In honor of Gilbert F. White, a pioneering scholar in technology, hazards, and social policy research.

An international and interdisciplinary conference that examines the economic, environmental, and cultural impacts of megaengineering projects.

. Location of Conference
Hilton Suites of Lexington Green, Lexington, KY

. No registration fee
Conference is free and open to the public.

. Dates: July 21-23, 2008
The conference begins with a reception and evening entertainment on Sunday, July 20, and concludes Wednesday afternoon, July 23.

. Megaprojects
Projects are huge either in scale and/or cost. These include hydroelectric dams, irrigation systems, coastal reclamation, river diversion, deforestation, ocean mining, surface mining, including mountain top removal, military ecologies, construction of new cities and capitals, airports, harbors, railroads, airlines, and highways, hotels, theme parks, tourist developments. Other issues include construction companies, major financial institutions (IMF, World Bank), etc.

  • Irrigation that lowers the Aral Sea

  • Construction of the Trans Amazon highway
