| Department
Founded in 1892, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Kentucky offers the B.S., B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in geology, a minor in geology, and administers a topical major (B.S.) in Environmental Sciences. The Department currently includes 9 regular faculty members, one lecturer, and 12 other faculty who hold adjunct appointments. We currently have approximately 38 graduate students and 35 undergraduates enrolled in our program. Undergraduate Program Undergraduates interested in becoming professional geologists or who want to attend graduate school generally pursue a B.S degree. Those students who have interests in education, government, policy, or possibly law, may consider our B.A. degree. We have revised our curriculum to better meet the needs of the geological profession so that students who earn a degree from UK are well prepared to enter an ever-changing job market or go on to graduate school. We encourage our students to work alongside graduate students and faculty on research projects while they are juniors or seniors so that they can gain invaluable experience in the lab and the field. Graduate Program Research within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is funded by grants and contracts from NSF, DOE, PRF, and other federal, state, and industrial sources. Areas of graduate research include tectonics, hydrogeology, sedimentary geology, geochemistry, petrology, geophysics, and coal geology. Research opportunities often include cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey, the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute, and the Center for Applied Energy Research, all attached to the University of Kentucky. |
