Annotated guide to Volcanology on the Web
Here are three of our favorite volcano information sites (we'll add
more soon). Use the buttons
or scroll down for a fuller description of each site. If you know
of other really good sites, or beg to differ in your opinion, email
us and let us know.
Sample some of our favorite volcano sites....
1.
Volcano World...Perhaps the
best of the volcano sites
2.
U.S. Geological Survey...Everything
this group has to offer, which is a bunch.
3.
Global Volcanism Program...It
is run by the Smithsonian Instution, what else can I say?
Volcano
World
Topic: In depth information on volcanoes from all over the world.
Affiliation:Numerous contributors
Date reviewed: July 18, 1998
Comments: One of the most complete volcano pages on the web. Good,
updated information pages on just about every active volcano. Sign
up for their email service that alerts you to new additions and updates
to their pages. And check our their really nice Mount
Saint Helens page. Well done!

U.S.
Geological Survey
Topic: U.S. volcanoes and teacher resources
Affiliation: U.S. Geological Survey
Date reviewed: July 18, 1998
Comments: If you are looking for specifics about volcanoes in the
United States this is the place. The USGS covers it all with lots of cool
pics and background info. Also go to the Volcanoes
section of their Learning
Web to learn basics of volcanoes and for K-12 teacher resources (a
quick look at the lesson plans says Great!). They also have a 3-D
VRML model of Mt. St. Helens you can interact with, which I found too tricky
to get much out of (I've been away from gaming too long, I suppose).

Global
Volcanism Program.
Topic: More volcanoes
Affiliation: Smithsonian Institute
Date reviewed: March 5, 1997
Comments: Easy access to names of all the volcanoes of the world,
even non-active ones. Good set of well-commented volcano links (including
a listing by geographic area), full access to the volcano activity reports
of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network. Not the place to
go for lots of pretty pictures, but some good reference work.
