In the Cambrian Period, there were shallow oceans over a lot of the land. Sedimentary rocks were formed in the Cambrian Period, containing fossils such as brachiopods, snails, sponges and trilobites. Sediment means tiny bits of rocks, shells and other materials. Sedimentary rocks were usually formed under water. The Cambrian Period is part of the Paleozoic Era. It is the oldest period of that era.
