The Carboniferous Period was 60 million years long. It was the fifth of six (or seven) Paleozoic periods. Carboniferous rocks are an important source of minerals, natural gas, ore deposits and petroleum. Land with little life on it developed plants, insects and vertebrates during this period. Some of the fossils from this time are ammonites, productid brachiopods, sharks, bryozoans, trilobites and graptolites.
