Eastern Kentucky

A virtual view of Eastern Kentucky. This landscape is a creation of digital elevation data and a computer program called VistaPro. As seen from southern Jessamine County and looking east southeast, we see the headwaters of the Kentucky and Red Rivers as they come from the Pennsylvanian Plateau region. A few of the Knobs can be seen as the Red River Gorge is approached. In the far distance, the high topography of Pine Mountain is seen, the very frontal thrust fault of the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachians. The virtual image is actually of much higher resolution than the data set it is derived from -- notice the lack of a valley in the Kentucky River in the foreground. It looks more like a bunch of sinkholes all lined up. We're working on a better digital elevation model to use for this project.
