Herman Lee Donovan
17 March 1887 - 21 November 1964
Herman Lee Donovan was the fourth president of the
University of Kentucky,
from 1941 until his retirement in 1956.
He was born in
Mason county, Kentucky
in 1887 and graduated from Western Kentucky State Normal School
(now Western Kentucky University)
in 1908. He received an A.B. from State University (Kentucky) in 1914,
an M.A. from Columbia Teachers College in 1920, and a Ph.D. from
Peabody College for Teachers in 1925. He taught or held administrative
positions at schools in
Lewisburg,
Wickliffe,
Paducah,
and
Louisville, Kentucky.
He was also president of Eastern Kentucky State Normal School
(now Eastern Kentucky University).
He died in 1964 and was buried in the Lexington Cemetery.
Donovan Hall
on the University of Kentucky campus was named in his honor.
