James Hillary Mulligan
21 November 1844 - 1 July 1915

James Hillary Mulligan was born in Lexington on 21 November 1844, son of the locally prominent businessman Dennis Mulligan. He graduated from St. Mary's College (Montreal, Quebec) in 1864 and received his law degree from Kentucky University (now Transylvania University) in 1869. Editor, attorney, judge, state senator, consul-general to Somoa, and orator, Judge Mulligan wrote "In Kentucky," perhaps the best known poem about the state. His home, Maxwell Place, is now the offical residence of the president of the University of Kentucky.
