James Hillary Mulligan
21 November 1844 - 1 July 1915
James Hillary Mulligan was born in
Lexington
on 21 November 1844, son of the locally prominent businessman Dennis
Mulligan. He graduated from St. Mary's College (Montreal, Quebec) in 1864
and received his law degree from Kentucky University (now
Transylvania University)
in 1869. Editor, attorney, judge, state senator, consul-general to Somoa,
and orator, Judge Mulligan wrote
"In Kentucky,"
perhaps the best known poem about the state. His home,
Maxwell Place,
is now the offical residence of the president of the
University of Kentucky.
