What is an Active Directory account?
AD stands for Active Directory. This is part of the University-wide linkblue system that can allow you into many of the University's systems. Blackboard is such a system.

Does it cost anything to create an Active Directory account?
No, Active Directory accounts are absolutely free. Some faculty and staff members have been concerned about this because the faculty and staff account request form (pdf document) asks for an account number from their department. This is for verification only; no charges will be made.

How do I get an Active Directory account?
Students can request an Active Directory account via UAMS. Faculty and staff should use the account request form (pdf document). See also: "Can you show me how to request an Active Directory account?"

I am an instructor who will be teaching a course that includes non-UK students and participants, or other students and participants who will never be in the SIS database. How do I get Active Directory accounts for these people?
Use the same account request form (pdf document) as the faculty and staff. Have the head of the department or program through which your course is offered sign to authorize the creation of accounts for your students or participants. Next, to request that these be enrolled in your course, send a message to accounts@lsv.uky.edu the following 4 details:

  1. Course ID (such as PM662-201-20045 - click the green Courses tab to locate your course ID)
  2. The person's name
  3. His/her Active Directory username (but NOT password)
  4. Role you want the person to have (Student, Instructor, TA, Grader, or Course Builder - each has different privileges on Bb)
  5. In the subject line of your message, indicate what you are asking for to help our team be more efficient. Examples: TA to ENG 101 or Grader to MA 600.

I have an MC (Medical Center) account, is that the same thing?
Yes, an MC (Medical Center) account is the same as an Active Directory account. You may use your MC account information as if it were for an Active Directory account. A very small number of users with duplicate accounts in the MC and/or AD domains may still need to reconcile their Active Directory account with Bb6. If you know that you have an MC account, DO NOT request to have an Active Directory account created; this causes problems with the system. See also: "What is 'reconciling' my account?"

Can I have an Active Directory account without knowing it?
Yes, you might, if you use Outlook for your uky.edu email connect to the exchange server to read your email. The exchange server uses Active Directory for verification, so your Outlook exchange userid and password may be one and the same as your Active Directory account userid and password. See also: "I have an MC account, is that the same thing?"

I need to change my Default active Directory/MC password. Where can I do that?
Bb does not recognize the default AD password (u$ and the last six digits of your UK ID), and you must change it before logging in to Bb for the first time.

Also, your AD/MC password expires every 90 days. Bb will NOT notify you of password expiration. If you suddenly cannot log into Bb as usual, try changing your password.

You can easily change your Active Directory/MC/Exchange password at the Blackboard Password Manager (opens in a new window).
• In the Domain box, choose the type of account you have (AD or MC).
• In the Account box, put your active directory or medical center username.
• In the Old Password box, put your current password.
• In the New Password box, put a new secure password conforming to the rules at http://www.uky.edu/IT/CustomerService/Accounts/activedirectory.html#passwd_rules (opens in a new window).
