What is an Active Directory account?
AD stands for Active Directory. This is part of the University-wide linkblue system that can allow you into many of the University's systems. Blackboard is such a system.

Does it cost anything to create an Active Directory account?
No, Active Directory accounts are absolutely free. Some faculty and staff members have been concerned about this because the faculty and staff account request form (pdf document) asks for an account number from their department. This is for verification only; no charges will be made.

I am a non-UK student taking a course hosted at UK. Do I need an Active Directory account?
Yes. Everyone using an online course hosted through Blackboard at UK will need an Active Directory account. Contact the head of the department or program through which your course is offered. They will be able to fill out the account request form (pdf document) and authorize the creation of an account for you.

I have an MC (Medical Center) account, is that the same thing?
Yes, an MC (Medical Center) account is the same as an Active Directory account. You may use your MC account information as if it were for an Active Directory account. A very small number of users with duplicate accounts in the MC and/or AD domains may require special attention. If you know that you have an MC account, DO NOT request to have an Active Directory account created; this causes problems with the system.

Can I have an Active Directory account without knowing it?
Yes, you might, if you use Outlook for your uky.edu email connect to the exchange server to read your email. The exchange server uses Active Directory for verification, so your Outlook exchange userid and password may be one and the same as your Active Directory account userid and password. I need to change my Default Active Directory/MC/linkblue password or update an expired password. Where can I do that?
Bb does not recognize the default AD password (u$ and the last six digits of your UK ID), and you must change it before logging in to Bb for the first time.

Also, your AD/MC password expires every 90 days. Bb will NOT notify you of password expiration. If you suddenly cannot log into Bb as usual, try changing your password.

You can easily change your Active Directory/MC/Exchange/linkblue password at the UK Account Manager (opens in a new window).
• Click on "Manage Your Account" and login with your current linkblue userid and password.
• Click on "Change Password" in the box titled Chose Management Option.
• In the Current Password box, put your current password.
• In the New Password box, put a new secure password conforming to the rules at http://www.uky.edu/IT/CustomerService/Accounts/activedirectory.html#passwd_rules (opens in a new window).
• In the Verify New Password box, retype the new password you have chosen
• Click "Submit Change."
