making a single gradebook sortable for multiple sections
If you are teaching multiple sections of the same course, you can have us feed the student data for multiple sections into one single Bb course shell. Be warned, though, that Bb does not offer an option to divide the gradebook into separate
gradebooks, nor can the data be fed in a way that identifies the
section for each student. All your students from all sections will
be listed alphabetically in one gradebook. You'll know from your
registrar's lists which students are in which section.
However, there is a workaround of sorts. Following the steps below,
you can add a new column to your gradebook and designate each student
by his/her section number. Then this column can be sorted to
distinguish the sections (two or more).
- In your gradebook, once the students are enrolled, you can add a column (item) which you will name Section,
with Category specified as Other, info Displayed as Text, and No to both options. If at any point you need to modify those details, click the column
title, then the link Item Information.
- If necessary, Manage Items to move this column from the bottom up
to number 1 position. This will shift it in your gradebook from the
far right column over to the far left, next to the column of student
names.
- Click the title of the new column (Section) and then the link Item
Grade List. In the grade boxes at the right, enter info such as the following example,
inserting the proper section number and repeating the last name you
see at the far left, being sure to Submit when finished:
Example (for one course shell with two sections):
[Section#][Student Last Name] (no spaces in between section numbers and names)
1Albright
2Christman
1Jones
1Miller
2Peabody
2Smith
If the names are long, you won't be able to enter all characters
(limit 7-8 characters).
- In the new column, you'll see only section numbers (in our Example that would be "1" and "2") without names.
However, the names are hidden, and will assure proper alphabetical
order when you sort.
Click the tiny white triangle at the top of the column. The sections will be divided out by numbers
- all the 1s will be listed in
alphabetical order, and so will all the 2s, etc. This sorted order will
stick, even after you logout and login again.
