Knowledge is a vital organization resource. It is the raw material,
work-in-process, and finished good of decision making. Distinct types of
knowledge used by decision makers include information, procedures, and
heuristics, among others. An ability to adeptly manage such diverse types of
knowledge is crucial for the productivity of both individual decision makers and
the organizations within which they work. A variety of computer-based techniques
for managing knowledge (i.e., representing and processing it) have been and will
continue to be devised to supplement innate human knowledge management skills.
As a field of study, knowledge management is concerned with the invention,
improvement, integration, usage, administration, evaluation, and impacts of such
techniques. Progress in this field has significant implications for individual
effectiveness within organizations, organizational competitiveness in the global
marketplace, and economic success of states or regions. These simple but
important observations lie at the foundation of the Kentucky Initiative for
Knowledge Management (KIKM). Established in 1988 within the University of
Kentucky's College of Business and Economics, KIKM's purpose is 1) to foster
cutting-edge research that stimulates, discovers, and explores new
computer-based possibilities for knowledge management, making notable
contributions to the advance of the field; 2) facilitate effective, up-to-date
instruction about the rapidly growing and changing field of knowledge
management, including computer-based possibilities for supporting the decision
making, communication, and coordination of individuals, groups, and
organizations; 3) establish a reputation for innovation and expertise in
knowledge management, bringing a degree of visibility that can help attract,
spawn, and enhance business in the state, as well as adding to the prestige of
the College of Business and Economics and the University of Kentucky. KIKM
serves as a focal point, vehicle, and support unit for those who seek to
participate in working toward the fulfillment of these purposes.
KIKM activities that aim to support the objective of the College being
recognized as a first-rate institution in knowledge management research and
education include the following:
- attracting promising students and faculty by building an academic/research
program recognized on a national basis,
- maintenance of advanced computer lab facilities for conducting research on
knowledge management issues,
- timely dissemination of research results through the KIKM series of
research papers and occasional KIKM monographs,
- covering research expenses of doctoral students and faculty in the area of
decision science and information systems (DSIS),
- funding summer research assistantships for DSIS doctoral students,
- working on knowledge management issues with faculty at affiliated Kentucky
institutions to raise the caliber of higher education and research in
state-assisted universities across the state,
- participation in the sponsorship and organization of conferences concerned
with knowledge management,
- providing complementary support for research funded by external agencies,
- sponsoring guest speakers, seminars, and the professional development of
students and faculty,
- cooperating with other initiatives, centers, and institutes concerned with
bridging the realms of management and technology.
Structurally, KIKM has the following participants:
- the KIKM Director who oversees the foregoing activities,
- a teaching assistant whose duties are dedicated to operating and
maintaining the lab facilities in support of graduate education,
- part-time staff assistance for the Director,
- the KIKM Faculty Associates who contribute to the KIKM research paper
series and teach in the area of decision science and information systems at
the University of Kentucky,
- the KIKM Affiliates composed of departments at other state-assisted
universities whose faculty members conduct research and teaching related to
knowledge management,
- the KIKM Liaisons consisting of one representative from each KIKM
Affiliate.
Funding for KIKM activities comes from endowments, College support of the
teaching assistants and staff, University equipment grants, University incentive
program awards for external grants obtained by KIKM Faculty Associates,
contributions by KIKM Affiliates, and individual and corporate sponsorship.

Current and recently completed research projects by KIKM Faculty Associates
and their doctoral students have depended heavily on KIKM research facilities
and funding. These include:
- Implementation of a distributed computer-based system for studying
contract net effects and alternatives. This system is sufficiently parametric
to allow it to mimic contract net concepts and variations reported in the
literature. As such it has served as a platform for studying hypotheses about
multiparticipant FMS scheduling.
- Implementation of knowledge acquisition software for eliciting behaviors
of experts in treating uncertainty. This software has enabled an experiment
studying hypotheses about alternative certainty factor algebras proposed for
expert system development.
- Implementation of a system for laboratory experimentation for the study of
DSS evaluation issues. Using this system, hypotheses of a DSS framework
involving ex-ante and ex-post evaluation were examined.
- Use of GroupSystems to examine effects of alternative usage patterns in
unstructured group decision making.
- Implementation of an experimental environment for analysis of electronic
markets and use of that system to study insider trading issues.
- Implementation of a system to examine effects of group size, risk taking,
and decision rules on solution time and quality in cases of knowledge
acquisition from groups of experts during expert system development.
- Extensive simulation studies of machine learning approaches in the context
of flexible manufacturing system scheduling.
- Implementation of a distributed system to permit laboratory study of
hypotheses about aggregation methods employed by multiple participants engaged
in multicriteria decision making.
- Implementation of software for testing the generalizability of a specific
genetics-driven DSS in simulated manufacturing environments. - Implementation
of a system to exhaustively test a genetic algorithm input parameter
specification method.
- Implementation of a job shop scheduling system that allows an experimental
investigation of the effectiveness of a local search technique called beam
search. The system can be used in a variety of research projects related to
scheduling and searching (e.g., benchmark problems and existing test cases are
used in a performance analysis of the search technique).
- Implementation of a genetic algorithm machine learning technique to
discover relevant attributes for part family formation in group technology.
Existing data from two local manufacturing companies is being collected and
used for this study. This research is expected to open up new avenues for the
study of knowledge acquisition automation.
- A Delphi study to establish a descriptive framework for characterizing
organizations' knowledge management.
- A survey-based study of environmental impact theory from the standpoint of
information technology management.
- Implementation of an expert system for assessing internal control
weaknesses and use of that system in studying its value for training and
decision support of managers.
- A survey-based study on the competitive impact of alignment between
information systems strategy and business strategy.
- An empirical investigation of information systems planning autonomy in
US-based subsidiaries of globally competing firms.
- Development of a generic model of knowledge management activities, called
the Knowledge Chain. This model is examined with respect to examples in the
literature and a survey that examines the relationship between the model
activities and competitiveness
- An investigation of the relationship between enterprise systems and
decision support intentions, characteristics, and benefits.
Such projects have resulted in multiple dissertations and numerous research
papers.
