The School requires all students to join our electronic discussion list. This discussion list is an important way for the School to distribute announcements and for the community of the School to share questions and discuss issues. This is a particularly important opportunity for our off campus students to get to know their Lexington campus counterparts and for faculty and students to share ideas. The School holds students responsible for information distributed via the listserv. You will need an active e-mail account to subcribe to the list. The University of Kentucky provides free e-mail accounts to all registered students. Two ways to join the list: - You may send a SUBSCRIBE SLIS first name lastname message to LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU (this is the address of the program that manages these lists at UK), such as:
To: listserv@lsv.uky.edu Message: subscribe slis Mary Smith - Or you may send an e-mail message that includes your full name to the list owner (will.buntin@uky.edu) expressing your interest in joining the list.
Either way, please remember that since this is a private list, the list owner must act on all subscriptions. There could be a delay of a day or two from the time you submit the request to the time it is acted on. If you don't receive a confirmation note from the listserv within a few days, you should follow up with a note to the list owner at the address above. Please note that there are policies and guidelines relating to the use of this list that you should become familiar with. Also note that this is a private list intended for the students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the School. To leave the list: - Send a SIGNOFF SLIS message to LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU (the program that manages the list) from the email address you use for your subscription.
Example: To: listserv@lsv.uky.edu Message: signoff slis - Or you may send an e-mail message that includes your full name to the list owner (jbmill00@pop.uky.edu) expressing your desire to leave the list.
To change addresses, just unsubscribe the old address and sign up again from the new account (see above). SLIS Discussion Group General DO's and DON'Ts (see Guidelines for a more complete discussion of frequently asked questions) - DO join the list and remain on it for your time in the program.
- DO read and save the initial welcome message from the list.
When you subscribe to our list, you will receive an initial welcome message. You should keep that message because it contains important information about managing your discussion group membership including how to sign off from the list when you decide you want to. - DO take advantage of the list to share information and get to know others.
- DO treat everyone with respect.
- DO learn about the netiquette of email discussion lists.
- DO update subject lines if needed when replying to the list.
- DO learn how to manage your subscription (change addresses when needed, sign off if you want when you finish your program, etc).
- DO use antivirus software.
- DO consider sending job posts directly to me (jbmill00@uky.edu) for inclusion on our web site instead of posting them to the list. - DON'T flame or attack.
- DON'T use patently offensive language, engage in name calling, or deride any group of list members.
- DON'T reply to the list with a message intended for one individual.
- DON'T reply to list messages with the one word reply of agreement to a previous post (the famous "I agree" or "ditto" response doesn't really contribute much to a discussion).
- DON'T send attachments unless there is no other way to share the information with everyone.
Welcome to the discussion list and thank you for your cooperation! |
