LIS 609 Current Problems [and Issues] in Library & Information Science

Course Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course that examines current philosophical and managerial issues in library and information science. Focus is on the origins, analysis, evaluation, and current status of these issues.

PURPOSE OF COURSE: To provide students with an overview of major issues, problems, and developments that affect libraries and information agencies.

FORMAT OF COURSE: The course will be conducted in a lecture and discussion format. The instructor of record and others first identified major issues, problems, and developments in library and information science, and then identified persons to lecture on them. Questions and discussion are encouraged and expected.

READINGS: If a lecturer provides citations to readings, the citations will be passed along to those enrolled in the course. If a lecturer provides readings, they will be put on reserve in the lab.

GRADING: Course grading will be based on two examinations. In each examination the student will be required to write two essays, from several class topics selected by the instructor. Class notes and readings are not be used to write the essays. Topics selected for the second examination will come only from those in the second half of the course. An essay will receive 1 of 3 "grades": high pass, pass, fail. Course grade will be arrived at in this way: COURSE SCHEDULE:

I have read a number of articles and books on copyright, and an excellent introduction to and overview of copyright is: Edward Samuels, The Illustrated Story of Copyright, Thomas Dunne Books, St Martins's Press, 2000. Mr. Samuels teaches at New York University Law School, and he invites people to visit his Web site, http://www.edwardsamuels.com/copyright/, which I found worthwhile Mr. Samuels uses his Web site as a way to provide information since the book was published.
