Jumpstart

Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Jumpstart Lexington at the University of Kentucky helps do this by putting UK college students in one-to-one mentoring relationships with "at risk" preschool children in Lexington's community. We want you to become involved in Jumpstart!

What would my job entail?

Jumpstart students (Corps members) commit to completing 300 hours of service to children and families in one academic year (Fall to Spring). Each student is assigned to a team, then to a classroom, and an individual child, where the majority of the service occurs. Students work as a team to implement session plans and to work with children on literacy and social/emotional skill development. All students receive training prior to service to insure that they are prepared for service. There are also additional service activities throughout the year to help further impact Lexington's community. This is an excellent opportunity to gain the invaluable experience of working on a team and developing leadership skills for the future.

Where would I be working?

All training occurs on campus, however the majority of the work is done off campus. Jumpstart program partners include: Fayette County Public Schools, Children's Haven at Salvation Army, and Community Action Council Head Start at Bluegrass Community Technical College. Each student travels to their team's assigned classroom for sessions and Classroom Assistance Time at least twice per week.

What are the qualifications and how do I apply?

Any full time student can apply! If you love children and you are interested in making your time matter, join Jumpstart. Apply today! Interested students can learn more and apply at Jumpstart web site. From the main page, click on the tan colored tab entitled "College Students".
