AGTC NEWS

NEW DIRECTOR
Dr. Christopher Schardl resigned as director of AGTC in order to take position of Chair of Plant Pathology. We wish him great success in this endeavor and thank him for his years of service for AGTC. AGTC would not be here if not for Dr. Schardl. Our new director will be Dr. Mark Farman (Plant Pathology). Dr. Farman has already been actively involved with AGTC functions. He will be a great asset to our facility. To learn more about Dr. Farman visit his lab webpage.

NEW RATES
New rates are effective July 1, 2011. The rates for many of our 454 schedules were reduced due to the volume of sequencing last fiscal year. Most of the Sanger sequencing increased a little. In order to keep our current rates we will have to do a similar amount of sequencing this year. So keep those samples coming! For information about sequencing and the next Users Forum please contact us at agtc-support@lsv.uky.edu

Introduction and Mission

The University of Kentucky Advanced Genetic Technologies Center provides a key element in the vision of UK as a Top 20 research institution and a center of excellence in molecular biosciences. UK-AGTC is a DNA sequencing service center/core facility specializing in high-throughput genetic analysis with a strong emphasis on customer service and bioinformatics support. This Service Center complements other new campus facilities devoted to transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and structural biology and serves research clients both on and off campus. AGTC has the potential to enhance the visibility of UK in the modern genomics world while providing a nucleus to integrate biological research entities throughout the institution itself, thus reducing the University's need for outsourcing.

The initiation of the UK-AGTC at the University of Kentucky was made possible by Senator Mitch McConnell through USDA-CSREES funds earmarked for the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. The UK-AGTC has also benefited from strong support from the Commonwealth of Kentucky and additionally has leveraged approximately $16,000,000 in external grant support.
