Educated in Biochemistry at Cornell University (B.S. 1978) and the University of California at Davis (Ph.D. 1983). Received postdoctoral training in the Cytogenetics Department at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge, England (1983-1985). Joined the University of Kentucky in 1985, specializing in molecular biology, biochemistry and evolution of plant-symbiotic fungi.

Alfred D. Byrd has earned a B. S. in Medical Technology from Michigan State University (1976) and an M. S. in Microbiology from the University of Kentucky (1984). He has worked as a research analyst for Dr. Christopher Schardl in the College of Agriculture since 1985, and has operated ABI Prism 310 and Beckman-Coulter CEQ genetic analyzers since the college acquired these instruments.
