Taiko Drumming

The Cincinnati/ Dayton Taiko Troupe performs traditional Japanese druming at the Lexington Farmers Market (10am), at Joseph Beth Booksellers (11am), and the Lexington Downtown Public Library (2pm)

Make it a family day at our Craft Fair with activities for both kids and grown-ups like calligraphy, origami, printing, traditional games and more.

Music of Asia: A Showcase of Asian Virtuosos

Take a musical tour through Asia with Japanese koto, Chinese strings (zheng, and erhu), a Vietnamese dan bao (one stringed instrument) and the dizi flute.

12pm Japanese Tea Ceremony

Enjoy a "Nodate" (outdoor ceremony) on UK campus. Take a few minutes to take in the sights and sounds of Nature while partaking of the traditional "Matcha" (powdered green tea) and sweets.

The History and Practice of Kathakali Theatre of South India

Mr. V. Kaladharan, of the Kalamandalam school in Kerala India, will explain the history, stories and significance of this complex performance art which encompasses dancing, acting, vocal music, percussion, make-up and fantastic costumes.

7pm Kathakali Demonstration

Experience Kathakali first-hand with a demonstration from one of India's most promising young Kathakali artists, Shanmughan. You will also learn about training stages involved in becoming a Kathakali Performer.

10am Ikebana Workshop: The Art of Flowers with Keiko Thayer

Of all Japan's traditional arts, perhaps the most famed and actively practiced today is Ikebana, the art of flower arrangement. Experience for yourself why this art has enjoyed such an enduring prominence in Japanese culture.

4pm Century Mountain: Performance & Digital Exhibition

Huang Xiang and William Rock bring their artwork to life through a musical and poetic performance that "...honors the greatness in us as human beings that has made itself evident in...people who stood out like mountains throughout the centuries."  See their work in a digital exhibition at the Hub from October 1 through October 31.

6pm The "Gei" of Geisha:  Lecture & Performance by Kelly Natasha Foreman

The word Geisha is formed of two symbols: "Gei" (the fine arts) and "Sha" (person). Learn more about the musical art tradition of Geisha through lecture and performance.

Poet/calligrapher Huang Xiang and painter William Rock discuss their work which is in the tradition of Chinese Literati painting.

Huang Xiang and William Rock bring their artwork to life through a musical and poetic performance that "...honors the greatness in us as human beings that has made itself evident in...people who stood out like mountains throughout the centuries."  See their paintings at the Carnegie Center from October 4 through October 25.

CC Leung will present some works by Hong Kong composers and discuss their innovations and thoughts on merging Chinese and western music elements in compositions.

Professor Michael Sullivan of Oxford University delivers the keynote talk for our symposium the next day. "No other historian of Chinese art today commands such a wide range of knowledge as Michael Sullivan," says Professor Richard Barnhart of Yale University.

Concert with UK faculty and ensembles featuring Hong Kong composer CC Leung

The ArtsAsia Festival closes with a special treat: compositions written especially for our UK Symphony Orchestra and Chorale by Hong Kong composer, CC Leung. Includes the performances of talented soloists Shaolin on erhu and Bryan Lai on yangqin.
