FA501-001 Arts Study Tour: The ArtsAsia Festival
(3 credits)

Grading: Evaluation of coursework is based on the content, completeness, and the quality of submissions.
Assignments: You may choose Option 1 or Option 2. Both options require the production of a course portfolio. All written reports should be typed, double-space, with12-point font. The portfolio is due December 7, 2009. You may do an electronic portfolio using PDF files, or do it in PowerPoint. If you submit a hard-copy portfolio, I will return the folder with your inserts but we will keep the written reports, so please make a copy of the reports for yourself to keep.
Option 1
- Attend a minimum of twelve events during the ArtsAsia Festival. (60% of total grades)
- For each event attended, write a one-page critique describing your understanding of the content and your reaction to this art form.
- Write a report (3-5 pages) describing how you perceive the differences and similarities between Asian arts and Western arts in general. Describe how these events have or have not changed your appreciation of Asian and Western arts, and why.
- Portfolio - Required. Organize the materials listed above (items 1-3) in good order. Include all programs and program notes. If your portfolio is an electronic one, you may provide digital images of the programs and notes and related materials (using digital camera, or scanned pdf files). You can add your own photo-shots or video clips (if allowed). (40% of total grades)
Option 2
- Attend a minimum of eight events during the ArtsAsia Festival. (40% of total grades)
- For each event attended, write a one-page critique describing your understanding of the content and your reaction to this art form.
- Write a report (3-5 pages) describing how you perceive the differences and similarities between Asian arts and Western arts in general. Describe how these events have or have not changed your appreciation of Asian and Western arts, and why.
- Self-directed project: choose one below:
- Write a research paper (10-12 pages) about the history and/or philosophy of one Asian art form of your choice (e.g. Japanese Noh; Chinese GuQin music); include a minimum of eight library reference sources.
- For teachers: write a teaching unit including 6-8 lesson plans to introduce one or more Asian art(s) to your students (specify grade levels); include all materials, references and activities in the resources. Strategies and materials should be child-appropriate.
- Create a PowerPoint or movie to introduce the history and/or philosophy of one Asian art form of your choice; include reference sources (people, books, journals, www, etc.)
