TEACHING ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITY!!

“Popular Religion East and West: Coping with Grief, Loss, and Fear.”

That’s the title of a workshop for K-12 teachers, to be held in connection with the Southeast Regional Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies, to be held in Hilton Head from January 18-20, 2008.  You are invited to be one of the participants (up to 25 people) for this workshop, much of which will consider pilgrimages and other practices in Japan, relating these, also, to Western precedents.  While the workshop is only for Saturday, you are welcome to take part in the rest of the conference activities.

The workshop leader is Dr. James Leavell of Furman University, whose experience with popular religion began while he was a visiting professor in Japan from 1967-1969.  He has completed six Japanese pilgrimages, and has investigated pilgrimage sites in India, the Middle East, Western Europe and the American Southwest.  For the last four years he has been training South Carolina 6-12 teachers to use Asian material in their classrooms, as Director of the South Carolina Center for Teaching about Asia at Furman.

The modest registration fee of $25 will include workshop costs, the Saturday luncheon, a Friday evening opening reception and breaks.

The conference will be held at the beautiful Hilton Oceanfront Resort, and our group rate is $89 per room.

Please make your own pilgrimage to Hilton Head!!
