Editor’s Note

The Southeast Review of Asian Studies (SERAS; formerly called Annals), published by the Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, highlights the scholarly activity of Asianists in the Southeast.  The main forum for scholarly activity has been the annual meeting.  The Conference provides scholars an opportunity to present their findings in a number of panels organized around common themes.  This volume publishes some of those papers that have been selected in a refereed process as well as shorter scholarly notes and book reviews and on occasion worthy scholarship not delivered at the conference.  It also publishes the official record of the annual meeting, including the corrected program, abstracts of some of the papers presented, and minutes of the annual business meeting.  SERAS also presents other material by and about Asianists in the Southeast such as articles, essays, and reports on professional programs.

The editor acknowledges with great appreciation the invaluable work of the our Associate Editor, Stephen E. Gump,  and our Associate Editors for Manuscripts William Head, Tom Pynn, Paul Rodell and Paul Winther, who each read over two dozen high quality papers submitted by interested scholars.  We thank Barbara L. Wimble of  the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library  in Staunton, Virginia for her help in production and Robert Vincent of McClung Companies in Waynesboro, Virginia for assistance in printing this volume.

Asianists in the Southeast are invited to submit articles for Volume 28 (2007) no later than 1 March 2007 and book reviews and scholarly notes no later than 1 May 2007.  Preference will be given to papers actually presented at the 2007 annual conference, but scholars may submit other work as well.  We also treasure the high quality work of graduate students.  We are also very interested in receiving scholarly notes (commentary on research topics or research in progress) and book reviews.

SEC/AAS publishes an on-line version of this journal available at:

http://www.uky.edu/Centers/Asia/SECAAS/seras.html    The on-line version includes an index of all SERAS articles, submitted abstracts from the previous conference as well as

articles containing Asian scripts and photographs not found in the hard version.

Writers are requested to follow The Chicago Manual of Style with end notes for all citations.  Generally, papers should be no longer than twenty-five double-spaced pages (12 font Times New Roman).  We usually do not publish bibliographies.

Please submit all work electronically as an e-mail attachment to the editor at dmetraux@mbc.edu and metraux@yahoo.com or mail a hard copy and a disk version to: Daniel Metraux, Chair, Dept. of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA 24401 USA.  You may contact the editor by regular mail, e-mail, or by phone at 540-887-7063.
