NCTA Seminars
The Asia Center at the University of Kentucky is working with the East Asian Studies Center of Indiana University and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia to bring seminars on Teaching About Asia to teachers in Kentucky.
Our next seminar will begin January, 2010 at EKU in Richmond. Teachers will have an intensive study experience into the cultures and history of the great societies of Asia. Exploring and discussing written works while learning to meaningfully incorporate Asia into the classroom environment is the goal of this program. For more information on the NCTA program visit the national program website at: http://www.nctasia.org/.
This seminar is designed to help prepare teachers to prepare their students for a world where Asia demands greater attention. Demographically, Asia has over half the world's population. Economically, East Asia surpassed Europe as the United States' largest trading partner region in the 1970s. Culturally, four of the world's great religions origniated in Asia, shaping social customs, philosophy, and artistic expression around the world ever since.
This seminar is a great opportunity to:
- Become familiar with the history, culture, and contemporary societies of China, Korea and Japan.
- Be more confident and comfortable teaching about East Asia.
- Learn about print and audio-visual resources on East Asia to supplement your existing texts.
- Share ideas and strategies with other teachers.
- Acquire East Asian teaching resources for your school.
Those who complete the seminar will receive:
- $500 stipend
- $200 worth of texts and resources on Asia for your personal library
- $300 grant to your school for purchasing additional permanent resources on Asia
- The option to purchase three graduate credits
