Businesses Honored for Workplace Flexibility

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2008) − The University of Kentucky Institute for Workplace Innovation
(iwin) and Mayor Jim Newberry will honor
15 local companies that have been recognized nationally for their excellence in workplace
flexibility at a When Work Works Awards Breakfast hosted by iwin from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 30, at the Hilary J. Boone Center.
Applicants and winners of the Alfred P. Sloan Awards were benchmarked against other national companies regarding their implementation of effective workplace flexibility practices. Eight Lexington-based companies won the award, placing them nationally in the top five percent of companies. These companies include:

Eight Lexington-based companies won the award, placing them nationally in the top five percent of companies. These companies include:
- Ashland Terrace Retirement Home;
- Lexmark International Inc.;
- Smiley Pete Publishing;
- Benefit Insurance Marketing;
- Potter and Company, LLP;
- United Way of the Bluegrass;
- JRA Architects; and
- Woodward, Hobson and Fulton Inc.
In
addition, three Lexington companies received honorable mention honors, placing them among the
top 10 percent of companies nationally. These businesses are: Central Baptist Hospital; Dean, Dorton and Ford, PSC; and Fayette Heating and Air.
Local finalists for the awards, or companies that rank in the top 20 percent nationally included: Stoll Keenon Odgen PLLC; Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team (KORT); Community Action Council; and Central Bank and Trust.

When Work Works is an ongoing
initiative spearheaded nationally by the Families and Work Institute in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for a Competitive
Workforce and the Twiga Foundation. Funded by
the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, When Work Works
has been developed to highlight the importance of workplace flexibility as a strategy to
enhance businesses’ competitive advantage in the global economy and to help both
employers and employees succeed. Lexington is among 30 U.S. cities selected to participate in
the 2007 When Work Works initiative.
The Institute for Workplace Innovation is the lead organization for Lexington’s local When Work Works initiative. Locally, When Work Works in Lexington is guided by a unique university-community collaboration referred to as the Core Leadership Community Coalition (CLCC). The CLCC is comprised of six partners including the Mayor’s Office, Commerce Lexington, UK Institute for Workplace Innovation, Kentucky Small Business Development Centers, Bluegrass Chapter of Society of Human Resource Management and Business Lexington.
