File Editing

File editing can be done on UNIX systems with a variety of editors, but I do not recommend this to the naive user.  One of the common editors is vi.   Familiarity with vi is an advantage in using GCG programs like Seqed and Gelassemble.

Because I want to avoid UNIX editing, I suggest that you always FTP your file to your microcomputer, then use your favorite text editor.  Simpletext and Notepad are fine for most purposes.  The biggest problem in text editing is that you must always save your file as text!  A particularly common problem is that students who like to use Word or Wordperfect will save files in a .doc or .wpd format.  This is NOT compatible with UNIX commands.
