Telnet Basics

Telnet is a typical terminal emulation package.  This is a program that runs on your PC (microcomputer) that packages commands to run on the mainframe.   Results generated by the mainframe are packaged, sent to your terminal, and interpreted by your terminal emulator for display.  During a typical lab session, you will always have telnet running.

Your account on seqanal.mi.uky.edu should have the same login and password as your SeqWeb account.  If you have difficulty logging onto seqanal via telnet, your account login may not be the same for some reason.  Check with Richard Hanschu.

In the lab, we will use NCSA telnet.  This is a straightforward program.  One confusing aspect is that you should reset the backspace key to delete.   This is done from the Session menu.

At home or in your own lab, you may wish to use a PC.  Various telnet programs are available.  The telnet application that normally comes with Win95/98/NT is adequate.  CRT, a shareware version, is slightly superior.  this is available from download.com.  A simple way to find it is to search for CRT on their page.  The primary advantage of CRT is that it has a useful print function!
