UNIX-GCG Basics

Because we are switching back to the UNIX version of the GCG suite, you will have the opportunity to learn UNIX.  This actually is probably a benefit rather than a problem.  Once SeqWeb is made more bug-free and loaded onto a server, it will be easy, but UNIX skills may be valuable in any environment.

In addition to this very basic information, the University of Kentucky subscribes to a service, provided by the Gartner group, for computer-based instruction on computer applications, including UNIX.   Please check it out.

The  basics that we need are the following:

  1. Communicating with the mainframe via telnet

  2. Transferring files to and from mainframe via FTP

  3. Basic UNIX file structure and commands

  4. File editing, which we will do on the PC

  5. Basics of working with GCG programs.
