About

Jessie Powell

Jessie Powell is a graduate student at the University of Kentucky, enrolled in Gurney Norman's Creative Writing Class in the fall of 1998. Originally from southern Ohio, she received her bachelor's degree from the College of Mt. St. Joseph's in Cincinnati.

Her writing style has undergone a metamorphosis since she moved to Lexington, in August of this year. She says, "Before, my short stories were invariably in a happy vein. I have no idea where these depressing people like Maureen and Keegan came from. Certainly, they don't represent any actual people I know. They are purely figments of my imagination, and my imagination, unfortunately, keeps its secrets from me"

Jessie feels like Gurney's class has helped her tremendously in her writing. For one thing, it has forced her to write fiction, when she might otherwise concentrate on papers for her classes. For another, Gurney's suggestions have helped her understand her own writing style far more clearly than ever before.
