Black cutworm- dark head and dark body, granulated or pigskin body, a pair of small and a pair of large spots on top of each body segment. The black cutworm is the top one in the picture. The lower one is a different species but you see the trend... Cutworms - as soil dwellers - tend to be dark and dingy to blend in with the soil. In fact, the other cutworm in the picture is the dingy cutworm.
Can feed on corn, soybeans, tobacco, and many other crops and vegetables.
"Look-a-likes":
Variegated cutworms would be the only one we know that are somewhat similar. They are easily recognized by the single row of spots down the center of the back.
